Apprentice on the farm:

Like all farms, Rag & Frass is a very labor-intensive opperation, and we rely on many seasonal hands to get the job done!

Our full-season apprenticeship program is from February through November and offers room, board, a small stipend and a serious hands-on education.

Before applying:
Please read and fill out our COVID agreement HERE
and please read our Apprentice Handbook HERE (this explains housing, compensation, and expectations)

Apply for the 2021 Apprenticeship HERE (applications are due by Dec 15th or until positions are filled!)

A full-season farm apprenticeship is a huge commitment of time, training, trust, and physical and mental endurance. It is not for everyone, yet for individuals seriously considering a career in agriculure it is the best way to get a real understanding of production, farm operation, horticultural, plant and soil sciences, and farm business management - all skills needed to start a viable farm and become a professional grower.

Apprentices will be exposed to all aspects of the farm operation from crop rotation, cover crops, tractor use, greenhouse seeding and plant propagation, transplanting, weeding, mulching, harvest, post-harvest handling, CSA and market prep, farmers market sales, floriculture, floral design, record keeping, crop and business planning.

Who's a good fit?

Like the reality of agriculture, with the poop, birth, death, uncontrollable weather, bugs, long rows, rural isolation, sore muscles and dirt under the fingernails, this apprenticeship is not sugar coated and not for the faint of heart.  This is a dynamic operating farm in its formative years: the work is hard, the hours long, the season pushed, patience tested, experiments fail and tools break.  People with self-motivation, attention to detail, creativity and problemsolving, strong work ethic, sense of personal responsiblity, eagerness to learn, sense of humor, good communication and positive work attitudes are the best fit.

We will eat more fresh seasonal food than you can imagine, have fun, create traditions, thump SO MANY WATERMELONS and pick so many flowers.  We will go to bed tired and wake up busy, build enduring structures and lasting skillsets. Most importantly apprentices learn to embrace the challenges, hardships, and rewards of farming, turning romantic fantasy into a viable sustainable future.
